Friends, As covered in one of my previous blog:

How crawl works in SharePoint ||How indexing work||Basic concept .

We were discussing about ifilters , so How to get these ifilters and what are the various steps need to be taken in the configuration of ifilters? I will work with the example of PDF and the same works for the other types of ifilters or the extension of document which you want in search.

So, to install a PDF ifilters:

  1. Download Adobe PDF Ifilters for 32 & 64 bit platform in MOSS and 64 bit for SharePoint2010.Example Link for pdf version 11 is given below:
  2. Run the setup
  3. When the welcome page comes in, click Next.
  4. When the Software License Agreement page comes, click Accept.
  5. When the Choose Installation Location page comes, click Next.
  6. When the confirmation is displayed that the installation was successful, click OK.

Now to crawl the pdf files with pdf icon images , we have to put the image at SharePoint binary location:

Copy ICPDF.gif(it can be copied from installed files of ifilter) to location drive at which SharePoint Binaries installed: $\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Template\Images.

A PDF extension entry need to be added in SharePoint XML file:

Edit the file \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\12\Template\Xml\DOCICON.XML and put
<Mapping Key=”pdf” Value=”icpdf.gif”/>

Reset IIS to clear the cached settings. It is better to go for iisreset with noforce command: iisreset /noforce

It is pretty necessary to add the file types in the index list, only then the search will work:

  1. On the SharePoint Central Administration home page, Goto Shared Service Provider to open the Shared Services Provider administration site.
  2. On the Shared Services Administration home page, in the Search section, click Search settings.
  3. On the Configure Search Settings page, click File types.
  4. On the Manage File Types page, click New File Type.
  5. On the Add File Type page, in the File extension box, type pdf and click OK.

Note: If the filter for a document is installed after content is indexed, Full crawl on the content indexes need to be done in order to reflect the changes and include PDF documents in search results.

Hope I was able to describe the content correctly based on my knowledge and learning.

Hey Friends,

Sometime when we build a SharePoint server we can face issues with login. The login prompt keeps on asking password and no matter what I try, it is not letting me in.

You can follow the below step to get rid of this problem:
This solution I have found on TechNet website when I faced the same issue.

Method 1: Specify host names (Preferred method if NTLM authentication is desired)

To specify the host names that are mapped to the loopback address and can connect to Web sites on your computer, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

  • In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0
  • Right-click MSV1_0, point to New, and then click Multi-String Value.
  • Type BackConnectionHostNames, and then press ENTER.
  • Right-click BackConnectionHostNames, and then click Modify.
  • In the Value data box, type the host name or the host names for the sites that are on the local computer, and then click OK.
  • Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the IISAdmin service.

Method 2: Disable the loopback check (less-recommended method)

The second method is to disable the loopback check by setting the DisableLoopbackCheck registry key. To set theDisableLoopbackCheck registry key, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
  3. Right-click Lsa, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type DisableLoopbackCheck, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click DisableLoopbackCheck, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

Sometime it ask for reboot and it is difficult in prod environment. you can follow this link to avoid reboot but on your risk.

Hope I was able to describe the content based on my knowledge and learning.

How to avoid windows REBOOT after any operation required restart ?

Issue :

Today, I decided to clear my desktop. I am currently running with 2 SQL server instances with different names & versions & are not required now.

I start uninstallation of SQL server but after one uninstallation, second uninstallation gives errors of “Restart Computer”.

It’s very difficult to restart computer again & again when you are doing several things in parallel.

Resolution :

Here, I go for shortcut. I have changed the registry value of current session manager to avoid reboot.

Go to Registry Location : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSessionManager & Clear the entry of string PendingFileRenameOperations.

After change, I click on rerun to check status again for uninstallation & it works.

Note :

1) Its recommended to reboot system, whenever required.

2) Please be careful, while doing any changes to registry.

Ilustration of installation of AD in just simple 16 steps:

1)  Goto Run Prompt and type “dcpromo”

2) you can use the advanced mode installation steps by checking the box.       I prefer to use simple mode and add all entries manually.

3) It will check system Compatibity.

4) Choose Existing forest option if you are:

a) adding a domain controller.
b) If u create a new domain in existing forest. Else choose the other option.

5)  Type the FQDN of the domain u want. I am using test for this blog.

6) It will check the forest  name in use or not

7) Check the functional level of the AD:

Main Thing to remember: If you have server of Mixed configuration    ex: 2000/2003/2008 and if you choose functional level 2008. All the server other than 2008 will not able to connect themselves to AD and you will have to upgrade the remaing server to 2008.

Secondly : if you select functional level 2000 , then inspite of having server 2008 and installing AD on it you cannot use full features and functionality.

So choose the most appropiate.

8.  you can directly install DNS from this option.

9) IF you are using installing DNS and using dynamic IP configuration , then change the ip setting and give static ip using :

ncpa.cpl  –> Lan setting–> Ipv4 configuration

Set the static ip and continue

11)  Give a password which is need for a future use , when you have start this domain in directory service restore mode.

But remember the password

12)  You can also export the setting of AD from this option.

15)  AD got installed.

Restart your syatem and loginn with domain\admin account

Sometimes you went under such a surprising situation that a user exist in AD and it is not resolving the same user in MOSS Environment.

Ex: user of domain1 test\ashish

present is AD, but when you are trying to add the same user in MOSS of domain2 it is not resolving the same.

This situation occur when we occur configure server to support to AD using 1 way trust.

We need to tell to sharepoint to look into other domain also. It is quite simple.

All is game of 4 commands:

1) Get/Check property:

stsadm -o getproperty -url http://webapplication  -pn peoplepicker-searchadforests

This property will check if any property exist or not. If the property didnt exist you can set the

2) Set Password:

stsadm -o setapppassword -password <any password>

It can also be called as :Rerun the password encrypt command with different password.

NewPassword can be anything you want. It will encrypt the people picker password in ssp.

3) Set property:

stsadm -o setproperty -url http://webapplication -pn peoplepicker-searchadforests -pv “domain:domain1.local,domain\username,password;domain:domain2.local, domain\username,password”

It is also possible to add forest instead of domain, command for that

stsadm -o setproperty -url http://webapplication -pn peoplepicker-searchadforests -pv “forest:domain1.local,domain\username,password;domain:domain2.local, domain\username,password”

4) Clear Property:

stsadm -o setproperty -url http://webapplication -pn peoplepicker-searchadforests  -pv “”

Clear the peoplepicker-searchadforests property value via stsadm command and add the property again.
